2015 - Hurricane Patricia, the strongest hurricane ever recorded in the Western Hemisphere, with winds reaching an unprecedented 200mph, made landfall in Mexico, but caused less damage than initially feared. Within 24 hours of moving ashore the storm degraded into a tropical depression and dissipated soon afterwards

2006 - Jeffrey Skilling, the former CEO of Enron Corp., was sentenced to 24 years in jail following his conviction for fraud, conspiracy, and insider trading. Skilling’s $60 million in assets were ordered to be liquidated, with $45m going to a restitution fund for victims of Enron’s bankruptcy. Skilling said he would appeal the sentence

2002 - Around 50 masked Chechen rebels seized over 700 hostages at a Moscow theatre during a performance of a popular musical. The rebels, who included women with explosives strapped to their bodies, threatened to blow up the building if Russian troops did not withdraw from Chechnya within a week

1998 - American obstetrician Dr Barnett Slepian was shot dead in Buffalo, New York, the third doctor in five years to be murdered for performing abortions

1998 - Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat signed the Wye Accord in the U.S., reviving the stalled Middle East peace process

1996 - Opening statements were made in the civil trial of O.J. Simpson, sued for wrongful death by the families of his murdered wife and her friend

1990 - Ukrainian Prime Minister Vitaly Masol resigned after mass student protests, the first Prime Minister of a Soviet republic to quit under public pressure

1980 - Alexei Kosygin resigned as Soviet prime minister due to ill health. He was replaced by Nikolai Tikhonov

1958 - Russian author Boris Pasternak was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature for his novel, Doctor Zhivago, which was a best-seller in the West but not then published in his own country
